At least 18 people sustained injuries on Tuesday morning when a Gateway Bus overturned on the Kabale–Kisoro highway in Kanaba Sub-county, Kisoro District.

The bus was traveling from Kampala to Kisoro with approximately 60 passengers. Among those injured were Francis Byarugaba (46), Ketra Muhawenimana (19), Samuel Nteziyaremye (40), Martin Ntezimana (42), Janet Mujawimana (25), and Ivan Twisenge (24), all from Kisoro District.

Additional victims included Suzan Bonabana (39) and Prossy Nakimuri (38) from Mubende District; Florence Nakawesa (27) from Entebbe; Gladith Tushemerirwe (48) from Kanungu; Charles Higa (45) and Joseph Kwesiga (25) from Kampala; Bibian Athieno (29) from Tororo; Faith Kwagara (9), and an unnamed eight-month-old baby.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, confirmed the accident and noted that three of the victims sustained serious injuries. All the injured were transported to various medical facilities in Kisoro town for treatment.

The bus wreckage was later moved to Kisoro Central Police Station for examination. Initial investigations suggest the crash was caused by the driver’s delayed braking while negotiating the sharp bend.

This incident marks the second Gateway Bus accident in just a few days. On Sunday, May 25, another bus (registration UBM 707X) en route to Kabale from Kampala overturned in Rwabahazi Village, Muhanga Town Council, Rukiga District. In that crash, the bus failed to handle a curve, struck a pedestrian—Dafuroza Rwakinda—and landed in a roadside trench, leaving 11 passengers injured.

Police have urged bus drivers to exercise increased caution, particularly when driving through the winding, hilly roads in southwestern Uganda.
