Senior Police Officer CP Godfrey Maate Dies While on Duty in Kyotera

The Zonal Commander for Uganda’s Greater Masaka Region, Commissioner of Police (CP) Godfrey Maate, has died after collapsing while on duty in Sango Bay, Kyotera District.

According to police, CP Maate was rushed to a nearby clinic for treatment but was pronounced dead on Sunday night. The cause of death has not yet been confirmed.

CP Maate was appointed by the Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, in July 2025 to oversee policing operations in the Greater Masaka region ahead of the 2025/26 General Election.

A veteran officer, Maate joined the Uganda Police Force as a constable before steadily rising through the ranks to the position of Commissioner. He was among the first batch of officers to undergo training at Jinja Military School in 1998, alongside Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and Assistant Inspector General of Police John Ndungutse.

Throughout his career, CP Maate served in various leadership roles, including stints at Kampala Central Police Station, Kalangala, and Kasese districts, as well as several regional command positions.

He was also widely recognised for leading national security operations during school examinations, ensuring the integrity and safety of the process.

Police said further details about funeral arrangements would be communicated in due course.
