NUP’s Suada Madaada and Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro Remanded

The deputy spokesperson of Uganda’s main opposition party, the National Unity Platform (NUP), has appeared before a magistrate’s court in Kampala following his arrest earlier this week.

Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, who is seeking to contest the Nakawa East parliamentary seat, was arraigned in Kawempe Division Court on Tuesday alongside Saudah Madaada, a Kampala Central council aspirant. Ms Madaada had been detained a day earlier at the Uganda-Kenya border.

Both face charges of unlawful drilling, conspiracy to commit a felony, and related offences. The two were added to an existing case in which six members of NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi’s private security detail remain on remand facing similar allegations.

Speaking to journalists outside court, Mr Mufumbiro described the case as politically motivated.
“They know we did not commit any crime. These are trumped-up charges,” he said, claiming that he had been abducted by security operatives from the same court premises on Monday.

Mr Mufumbiro further alleged that state institutions, including the judiciary, were being used to entrench President Yoweri Museveni’s rule. He said he had been urged to renounce support for Mr Kyagulanyi while in detention but refused.

The magistrate ordered that both accused be remanded until 29 September, when the case will return to court.
