Makindye East MP Derrick Nyeko to Step Down in 2026

Makindye East MP Derrick Nyeko has said he will not contest in Uganda’s 2026 general elections, bringing his time in Parliament to a close after serving a single term.

Nyeko, who entered Parliament in 2021 on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, announced his decision on social media, describing it as the result of “deep reflection.”

He thanked constituents for their support and said he had served them with “honour and respect,” adding that his choice should not overshadow the progress made during his tenure.

“This does not diminish the journey we have walked together, nor the victories we have achieved,” he wrote, while encouraging residents of Makindye East to continue upholding unity and resilience.

The legislator acknowledged that his decision may disappoint some supporters, but insisted he was leaving politics with his integrity intact. “I remain the man of no corruption, no problems,” his statement read.

Nyeko’s announcement comes at a time of uncertainty within NUP over the party’s ticketing process for the 2026 polls, with many aspirants still awaiting the outcome of vetting.

It is unclear whether Nyeko’s withdrawal was linked to possible internal party dynamics or personal reasons.
