Museveni Appoints Jane Frances Abodo as New Principal Judge

President Yoweri Museveni has named Jane Frances Abodo, Uganda’s Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), as the country’s new Principal Judge.

The position became vacant after Justice Flavian Zeija was promoted to Deputy Chief Justice earlier this year, following the retirement of Justice Richard Buteera in April upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70.

In the interim, Lady Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga had been serving in an acting capacity.

Justice Abodo’s appointment adds another milestone to her career. Since becoming DPP in 2020, she has been praised for strengthening the prosecution service, spearheading anti-corruption efforts, and introducing digital reforms in the justice system.

As Principal Judge, she will oversee the High Court and supervise judges and registrars nationwide, a role central to the administration of justice.

The government has yet to announce who will succeed her as Director of Public Prosecutions.
