Dozens Injured After Bus Plunges Into Floodwaters in Abim

Several passengers were injured on Thursday when a Gateway bus travelling to Abim slid into floodwaters at Alito Bridge, leaving its front section submerged.

The vehicle, which had set off from Lira, is reported to have attempted crossing the flooded bridge before losing control and tipping into deep waters. Passengers were thrown from their seats during the incident.

Police confirmed that the injured were rushed to Abim Hospital for treatment.

Residents say the accident highlights the worsening condition of Abim’s road network, which has been badly affected by weeks of heavy rainfall. Sections of the Lira–Abim and Soroti–Abim routes remain treacherous, with vehicles frequently stranded.

“This is not the first accident of this kind,” passenger Peter Odong told the BBC. “Leaders have remained silent as people continue to suffer on these roads.”

The Abim–Kotido stretch has also been described as dangerous, with broken bridges and muddy terrain making travel hazardous. Locals accuse the government of neglect, saying neither the Abim–Lira nor Abim–Soroti roads have been tarmacked despite long-standing promises.

“These roads have been listed in government plans for decades, but no real work has been done—not even the construction of proper bridges,” said resident Jane Akello.

Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution when using flood-prone routes in the Karamoja and Lango sub-regions as rains continue to disrupt transport across the region.
