Man Arrested for Killing Grandfather Over UGX 10,000

Police in northern Uganda have detained a man accused of fatally stabbing his grandfather following a dispute over money.

The victim, 76-year-old John Ongu, a resident of Te-Okango village in Otuke District, is reported to have been attacked by his grandson, Calvin Ongu, after refusing to give him 10,000 shillings (about £2) to buy shoes.

According to investigators, the incident happened on the evening of 18 August. The elderly man had recently borrowed 500,000 shillings from a local loan scheme, a fact relatives believe may have prompted the demand for money.

Police said a quarrel broke out after Mr Ongu declined the request, during which the suspect allegedly grabbed a knife and stabbed him. The grandfather was rushed to a nearby clinic but was later pronounced dead.

North Kyoga regional police spokesperson SP Patrick Jimmy Okema confirmed the arrest, explaining that villagers apprehended the suspect before handing him over to police. A blood-stained knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered from the scene and will be used as evidence.

“This is a very unfortunate case. We urge young people to work hard for what they need instead of expecting handouts,” Mr Okema told journalists.

Witness statements have been recorded, and a postmortem examination has been carried out before the body was released to the family for burial. Police said the case file will be forwarded to the Resident State Attorney for further legal review.
