NRM Tribunal Upholds Rwashande’s Victory in Lwemiyaga Primaries

Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has confirmed Brigadier General (Rtd) Emmanuel Rwashande as its official flag bearer for Lwemiyaga Constituency, following a dispute over the party’s primary elections.

The party’s Election Disputes Tribunal dismissed a petition by incumbent MP Theodore Ssekikubo, who had challenged the results, citing alleged voter intimidation, irregularities, and mishandling of ballots at some polling stations.

In its ruling, the tribunal said the primaries were conducted in line with NRM electoral rules and that the complaints raised did not significantly affect the outcome. It declared Rwashande’s victory valid, clearing him to represent the party in the 2026 general elections.

Reacting to the decision, Rwashande described the ruling as a win for the people of Lwemiyaga, pledging to run a campaign centred on unity, development, and better service delivery.

“I thank the NRM Electoral Commission and the tribunal for handling this matter fairly. My focus remains on serving Lwemiyaga with integrity and dedication,” he said.

The tribunal also urged party members to respect the ruling and rally behind the chosen candidate to strengthen cohesion ahead of the national polls.

The judgment is expected to ease tensions in Lwemiyaga, where the contested primaries had deepened divisions among supporters.

Rwashande will now carry the NRM flag as he seeks to enter the 12th Parliament, with his campaign expected to highlight peace, security, and socio-economic progress in the constituency.
