KANUNGU: Woman Murdered, Tied in Sack, Dumped in River Ntungwa

Police in western Uganda’s Kanungu District have opened a murder investigation following the discovery of a woman’s body tied with ropes and stuffed in a sack floating in the Ntungwa River.

The body, which remains unidentified, was found on the afternoon of 2 August 2024 by a group of boys fishing in Kanabizo Cell, Ntungwa Parish, Nyamirama Sub-county. According to authorities, the boys spotted a green sack stuck in the water and, upon inspection, found the lifeless body inside.

They immediately alerted the area chairperson, Emmanuel Byamukama, who instructed his defence secretary, David Kasigeire, to notify the police.

A team of detectives led by a scene-of-crime officer arrived shortly after, documented the scene, and retrieved the body. It was transported to Kanungu Health Centre IV for a post-mortem examination.

Police say the body was still fresh at the time of recovery, indicating the woman may have been killed earlier that day before being dumped in the river.

Kigezi region police spokesperson, Elly Maate, said investigators are working to identify the victim and apprehend those responsible for the crime.

“We urge anyone with a missing female relative to visit the mortuary for possible identification so that the deceased can receive a proper burial,” Mr Maate said.

The motive behind the killing is not yet known, and investigations are ongoing.
