Police Hunt Catholic Priest and Driver Over 14-Year-Old’s Death in Buyende

Police in Uganda’s Busoga North region have launched a manhunt for a Catholic priest, a driver, and several unidentified individuals suspected of involvement in the death of a 14-year-old boy.

The deceased, identified as Joseph Kirya, was a resident of Wesunire in Makanga Ward, Buyende Town Council. Authorities believe he died following an alleged assault after being accused of theft.

The key suspects include Fr Silver Owori Osuna, 33, a priest serving at Wesunire Catholic Parish in Buyende District, and Mr Robert Gabula, a driver, along with other unnamed accomplices.

Busoga North police spokesperson Michael Kasadha confirmed the ongoing investigation, stating that the individuals are wanted in connection with what is being treated as a murder case.

According to police accounts, Fr Owori had been away from the parish when he reportedly discovered UGX 5 million missing from his room. The boy was later accused of the theft and brought to the parish by unknown individuals on the evening of Friday, 1 August 2025.

“Kirya was taken to the parish—not by police—and was allegedly assaulted before being confined overnight in a store room,” Mr Kasadha said.

He added that the following day, the priest contacted police—not to report the incident—but to file a complaint about stolen money, asking officers to arrest the suspect.

“When officers arrived at the scene, they were directed to the store, where they found the boy’s body. By that time, Fr Owori had already disappeared,” Mr Kasadha noted.

The body was examined and a post-mortem conducted before it was handed over to the family for burial.

Police have condemned the incident, warning against illegal detentions and acts of mob justice.

“While citizens may detain suspects in certain circumstances, only the police are legally authorised to hold individuals in custody,” Mr Kasadha emphasised.

Investigations are ongoing as authorities work to locate and apprehend the suspects.
