Uganda’s Ruling Party NRM to Elect 2026 Presidential Flag Bearer at August Conference

Uganda’s ruling party, the National Resistance Movement (NRM), will convene its 4th National Conference from 27 to 28 August 2025 at Kololo Independence Grounds, where it is expected to select its presidential flag bearer ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The announcement, made through a formal notice by President Yoweri Museveni in his capacity as NRM National Chairperson, stated that the gathering will take place under the theme “Building a Shared Prosperity: Investing in Uganda’s Future.”

A key item on the conference agenda will be the presentation and endorsement of the party’s candidate for the presidency. The National Executive Committee (NEC) is set to propose its chosen nominee to the delegates, who will then vote to confirm the selection. The approved candidate is expected to address delegates during the event.

The two-day gathering will also include internal elections for several high-ranking party positions within the Central Executive Committee (CEC), including the National Chairperson, First and Second Vice Chairpersons (with the second vice chair reserved for a woman), as well as six regional vice chairpersons representing East, Central, North, West, Kampala, and Karamoja.

Delegates will also receive the Secretary General’s report, hear campaign speeches from leadership aspirants, and pass key resolutions related to governance and party leadership. The event will reinforce the NRM’s founding ideological principles: patriotism, pan-Africanism, socio-economic transformation, and democracy.

As the party’s supreme decision-making body, the National Conference is expected to bring together thousands of delegates from across the country, including MPs, district officials, and senior NRM leaders.

Although the official notice did not reveal NEC’s recommended presidential candidate, many political analysts anticipate that President Museveni, in power since 1986, could seek a seventh term. The conference is likely to clarify his intentions.
