This initiative is specifically aimed at individuals whose ID details contain errors, particularly those introduced by NIRA itself during initial registration. In such cases, corrections will be processed free of charge, and a new ID issued without cost. However, applicants seeking changes due to personal reasons—such as marriage, religious conversion, or other legal grounds—must provide valid supporting documents and pay a fee of UGX 200,000.
The exercise also comes with a cautionary reminder: altering one’s date of birth for personal benefit is illegal. NIRA emphasized its commitment to maintaining the integrity and accuracy of the national registry.
In addition to updates, the authority is registering first-time applicants aged 16 and above, especially those previously captured as learners. This effort is part of a broader national campaign to ensure all eligible citizens receive a National Identification Number (NIN), in support of Uganda’s digital transformation agenda.
Overall, the campaign aims to enhance the reliability of the national ID database and improve citizens’ access to essential services such as education, banking, employment, and electoral participation.
