62 Injured as Gateway Bus Overturns in Rukiga District

At least 62 people sustained injuries early Sunday morning when a Gateway Bus overturned in Rwabahazi Cell, Muhanga Ward, Rukiga District.

The bus, bearing registration number UBM 707X, was traveling from Kampala to Kabale when it lost control and overturned around 6:40 a.m., blocking the roadway.

Eyewitnesses said the bus suddenly flipped, triggering a swift rescue response from local residents and authorities.

Most victims were rushed to Rotom Health Centre in Muhanga, while those with more serious injuries were transferred to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for further treatment.

Among the most seriously injured was Rwakinda Dafuroza, a pedestrian who was walking along the roadside when the crash happened. She sustained severe leg injuries and is being treated at Kabale Hospital, where doctors say her leg may need to be amputated.

Geoffrey Turinawe, a witness, recounted how nearby residents worked together to help extract passengers trapped in the wreckage.

According to Gateway Bus’ Muhanga area manager, Paul Ekyamazima, the driver claimed he swerved to avoid a motorcycle that suddenly entered his lane.

“I talked to the driver, and he said he was trying to avoid hitting a boda boda rider who unexpectedly joined the road,” said Ekyamazima.

However, some passengers expressed doubts, suggesting the driver might have been fatigued. Ronnie Nowamani and Mukasa Emma, both passengers on the bus, noted that most people were asleep at the time and suspect the driver may have nodded off.

Dr. Brian Mujjuni Byaruhanga, the officer in charge at Rotom Health Centre, said they treated about 40 victims for minor injuries such as cuts and bruises. Those with more serious injuries, including fractures, were referred to Kabale Hospital.

“None of the patients we received were in critical condition or required admission,” said Dr. Mujjuni.

By the time of reporting, police had not yet released an official statement, but investigations into the exact cause of the accident were ongoing.
