Two Children Dead, Four Hospitalized in Kalungu Family Poisoning

Police in the Greater Masaka Sub-region have launched an investigation into the suspected poisoning of a family of six in Kalungu District, which tragically claimed the lives of two young children.

The incident occurred Saturday evening at the home of Henry Kaganzi in Bulenzi B Village, Lwabenge Sub-county. The deceased have been identified as Esther Nattabi, aged 6, and Tabitha Nantaayi, aged 4. Four other family members, including Kaganzi’s wife, are in critical condition and are currently receiving treatment at St. Monica Birongo Health Centre.

Kaganzi recounted the horrifying moment he returned home to find his family in distress after allegedly consuming poisoned food. “I was shocked to find my family crying for help after eating food suspected to be laced with poison,” he said, adding that he immediately called for help and rushed the survivors to the hospital with the assistance of neighbors.

Lwabenge Sub-county Chairperson David Ssegawa expressed deep concern over the incident. “We were shocked to receive reports of the poisoning that claimed two children’s lives, while the rest of the family is fighting for survival,” he said. Ssegawa also urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation, noting that the family had reportedly been involved in a land dispute, which could be a potential motive.

Southern Regional Police Spokesperson Twaha Kasirye confirmed that an investigation is underway and condemned the act. He disclosed that two suspects — Vincent Jjingo and his wife Agnes Nabuuma — have been arrested to aid the inquiry.
