Two people lost their lives in separate incidents in Uganda’s Kigezi region on Saturday, with police blaming the rising murder rates on domestic violence, drug use, and land conflicts.
In Kabale District, a domestic dispute turned fatal when a Ugandan man allegedly killed his Rwandan wife, Donatele Mukandayisenga (alias Shantali), by striking her head with a metal bar. The incident occurred in Mayengo Cell, Katuna Town Council. She was rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital but was declared dead on arrival. The suspect is in custody.

Meanwhile, in Kanungu District, the body of 45-year-old Rogers Kakiiza was found in a stream in Nyakarambi Cell under mysterious circumstances. A passerby, Rosette Habasa, discovered the body and alerted local authorities. Investigations are ongoing.
Kigezi regional police spokesperson Elly Maate said such incidents are part of a concerning trend, citing 18 murder cases reported in April alone. Officials attribute the surge to issues like alcohol abuse, delayed justice, and land wrangles.
Kanungu’s deputy RDC, Gad Rugaju, emphasized the need for stronger coordination among law enforcement and judiciary sectors to tackle the problem. Religious leaders echoed the concerns, blaming moral decay, poverty, and unemployment for fueling violence.
