BUNDIBUGYO: Suspect dies in police custody

Authorities in Bundibugyo District have launched an investigation into the death of Mwesige Simbulireki, 40, who was found dead in a cell at Ntandi Police Post, in what is suspected to be a suicide.

Simbulireki, a resident of Bumbwende One Village in Mabere Sub-county, was discovered Thursday morning hanging from a rope tied to the window grille inside the cell. According to police sources, he had been arrested earlier that day following a complaint from an unnamed individual, though the nature of the complaint remains unknown. At the time of his death, he was reportedly the sole detainee.

Mr. Asaba Timothy Galibura, LCIII Chairperson of Ntandi Town Council, confirmed that Simbulireki’s body was taken to Bundibugyo Hospital for a postmortem examination to clarify the cause of death. He called for calm and encouraged public cooperation with the ongoing investigation.

The death sparked unrest among locals, who gathered at the police post demanding clarity on the incident.

Bughendera County MP, Mr. Acrobert Moses, appealed for patience and urged the community to allow investigations to proceed uninterrupted. He also called on anyone with information about the arrest or the complainant to come forward.

District Police Commander Ms. Stella Aliru confirmed a formal investigation is underway, with detectives working to reconstruct the events that led to the suspect’s death.

The deceased’s brother, Mr. Bwambale Geoffrey Simbulireki, voiced disbelief, revealing that Mwesige had been unwell and receiving treatment for malaria prior to his arrest. He questioned the circumstances that led to his detention and subsequent death.
