Christine Awori, a 30-year-old resident of Waigala Village in Bukatube Sub-county, Mayuge District, tragically died after lightning struck her home in the early hours of Saturday around 2:30 a.m. The strike ignited a fire that severely burned her upper body, leading to her death.
Her body was taken to Mayuge Health Centre IV for a postmortem before being handed over to her family for burial. Awori leaves behind four children, who sustained minor injuries during the incident and are currently being treated at a private clinic in Bukatube.

Community member Justin Odwori described Awori as a resilient and hardworking mother who singlehandedly supported her family. “She defied all odds to improve her children’s lives,” he said.
Busoga East Police spokesperson Michael Kafayo confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing. Emmanuel Okori, the male youth councillor for Bukatube Sub-county, urged the government to install lightning arresters in high-risk areas, emphasizing the recurring fatalities during heavy rains. “It’s critical for the government to prioritize lightning protection to safeguard vulnerable communities,” he said.
