24 PDM Extortion Victims Injured in Truck Accident on Way to Court

At least 24 people have been hospitalized after a truck they were traveling in overturned on Rukanga Road in Kabwohe Town, Sheema District, when the driver lost control while navigating a sharp bend.

The victims, among 40 residents from Masyoro Parish in Kyangyenyi Sub-county, were en route to attend a court session at the Kagango Chief Magistrate’s Court. The hearing involves their SACCO treasurer, Juliet Katushabe, who is accused of embezzling Parish Development Model (PDM) funds.

According to Greater Bushenyi police spokesperson Marcial Tumusiime, the group had hired the truck to attend the case where Katushabe faces multiple charges of fraud. Police said the accident was caused by speeding and the driver’s failure to handle a curve, leading the truck to overturn.

Twenty of the injured were admitted to Kabwohe Health Centre IV, while four in critical condition were referred to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.

Katushabe was arrested following numerous complaints from SACCO members, some claiming she took hundreds of thousands of shillings from them under the guise of PDM registration. She faces 85 counts of fraud and has been remanded to Nyakashambya Prison until May 8, 2025.
