One Guard Killed, Another Arrested in Failed DTB Bank Robbery in Wakiso

A private security guard was shot dead during a botched robbery attempt at Diamond Trust Bank’s Wakiso branch near the Wakiso–Busiro Land Zonal offices on Sunday, April 27, 2025.

Police, with support from other security agencies, arrested another guard and recovered two firearms at the scene in Kkona–East village, where the suspects tried to steal money from the bank.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, Mr. Patrick Onyango, said the incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. The deceased, Emmanuel Okao, and the arrested suspect, 27-year-old Justine Okello, were both employees of G.K.O Security Company.

“After instructing the suspects to surrender, police deployed tear gas. However, the suspects cocked their weapons, prompting officers to respond with gunfire,” Onyango explained.

He added that both guards had been assigned to the night shift and had removed their uniforms before attempting the robbery to ease their escape.

Sources revealed that the suspects gained access to the bank by breaking through the washroom ceiling and tried to force open the safe, triggering the alarm that alerted Wakiso Police Station.

Reports also indicate that a female guard stationed at the entrance, while not directly involved, was allegedly aware of the robbery plot as her colleagues openly conspired.

Responding officers found the bank’s gate locked and the female guard hiding inside a secured room near the entrance.

Among the first responders was Kampala North Regional Police Commander Moses Nanuka, who praised the team’s quick action. He confirmed that after an exchange of gunfire and tear gas, Okao was shot dead.

“One suspect was shot from the ceiling, and the second, realizing his colleague was dead, surrendered from the same ceiling,” Nanuka said.

Residents said gunfire could be heard between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m., causing widespread panic.

“We were terrified. People at the nearby Nest Bar were ordered to stay put until the gunfire ended,” said resident Innocent Nsereko.

In a statement, Diamond Trust Bank assured the public that no property was lost.

“We are thankful for the rapid and professional intervention of the security forces, which ensured the protection of our premises. All bank property remains safe and secure,” the statement, dated April 27, 2025, read.

The bank also noted that they are cooperating with police and other security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation.
