“I Won’t Return to NUP’ -MP Kabugo

Bukoto South Member of Parliament Twaha Kagabo has announced that he will not be returning to the National Unity Platform (NUP) as Uganda approaches the 2026 general elections.

Kagabo, who was elected to Parliament in 2021 on the NUP ticket, has recently distanced himself from party activities and has been seen attending functions organized by the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the Patriotic League of Uganda. His absence has raised concerns within NUP and jeopardized his chances of being re-nominated for the next election.

Speaking on Sanyuka Television on Friday, Kagabo publicly declared, “To NUP members, I, Twaha Kagabo, MP for Bukoto South, will not return to the party. I am handing back your card.”

Despite parting ways with the party, Kagabo affirmed his intention to run for re-election in 2026, saying, “We shall contest again, and whoever emerges victorious will take the seat.”

His remarks come shortly after NUP issued an ultimatum demanding explanations and apologies from several MPs who have been inactive in party affairs. Those who fail to comply within 30 days risk being stripped of their party cards.

Among those named alongside Kagabo are former Leader of the Opposition Mathias Mpuuga, Abed Bwanika, Joyce Bagala, and Jimmy Lwanga.

Kagabo criticized the party’s approach, suggesting that NUP should have handled internal issues more respectfully and formally. “A party like NUP should address misconduct in a structured, dignified manner—not like a public spectacle,” he said, adding that he does not feel intimidated by the ultimatum.

The directive was issued during a training session for party members in Buganda as part of preparations for the 2026 elections. During the session, NUP Deputy President Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi urged party leader Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, to withdraw support from members who have become disengaged.

Kyagulanyi agreed, emphasizing the importance of unity as the elections draw closer, saying, “Time is limited, but as advised by the deputy president, we shall proceed and see the outcomes.”
