Kasese Officials Sound Alarm Over Renewed ADF Threat from DRC

As Easter festivities draw near, leaders in Kasese District are urging residents to remain alert in light of increasing instability in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) remain a threat.

Communities along the Mpondwe border have been specifically advised to stay vigilant throughout the holiday period.

Kasese District LCV Chairperson Erifazi Muhindi emphasized that security is a shared responsibility and encouraged residents to report any suspicious individuals who could endanger the area’s peace.

“Maintaining peace requires a joint effort,” Muhindi stated. “Let’s collaborate by identifying elements that may seek to disrupt the calm we currently enjoy.”

He also appealed to families to steer clear of actions that might lead to domestic violence during the Easter celebrations.

“Let Easter be a season of love and togetherness. I urge couples to avoid behaviors that might fuel conflict at home,” he added.

Addressing concerns over border security, State Minister for ICT and National Guidance Godfrey Kabbyanga reassured the public that the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), in coordination with the Congolese army (FARDC), are maintaining firm control over the area.

“The UPDF, in partnership with FARDC, are actively monitoring the border to prevent any hostile activity,” Kabbyanga said.

Meanwhile, Kasese Municipality MP Ferigo Kambale advised Easter celebrants—particularly those who need to cross River Nyamwamba—to be extra cautious due to the ongoing rains.

“Celebrate responsibly, especially near places like River Nyamwamba,” Kambale warned. “Many people drink excessively and still attempt to cross rivers on their way home, which is risky with the current threat of flooding.”

With Easter approaching, Kasese leaders are calling for peace, unity, and responsible celebration to preserve stability in the face of regional insecurity.
