The Ministry of Lands and Housing, in collaboration with Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), is proposing to construct 638 houses for survivors of the Kiteezi landfill disaster.

The proposal, whose particulars were not disclosed, was submitted to Prime Minister Robinnah Nabbanja and aims to provide permanent housing for victims of the landfill collapse.

Allegedly, the government plans to allocate Shs84 billion for the construction of three-bedroom houses or Shs77 billion for two-bedroom houses.

Whether by private partnership or bidding, Bulwadda Estates Ltd. has been tasked with building the homes on KCCA land in Ddundu.

Minister of State for Housing, Percis Namuganza, confirmed that 638 houses will be constructed. The beneficiaries will repay the cost through deductions from the value of their Kiteezi land.

Prime Minister Nabbanja advised additional consultations on the proposal, directing the Ministry and KCCA to prepare a comprehensive document for Cabinet review.

This initiative aims to address the shoddy neglect of the landfill, which collapsed, killing residents living within it’s borders, and led to the state opening criminal proceedings against select heads of the City Authority.
