Police in Mityana District have arrested an Electoral Commission official accused of receiving Shs268,000 from a candidate in exchange for allegedly manipulating election results.
The suspect, John Mawejje Kwizera, 45, is the Electoral Commission supervisor for Central Division in Mityana Municipality.
Police say Kwizera received the money on July 24, 2026, from William Bukenya, who is contesting for the Local Council I chairperson seat in Kansuleeti Village.

According to investigators, Kwizera allegedly promised to alter the official Declaration of Results Form and declare Bukenya the winner regardless of the actual vote outcome.
Kwizera, a resident of Butega Village in Ttamu Division, was subsequently arrested and taken into police custody.
Wamala Regional Police spokesperson Lameka Kigozi confirmed the arrest and said investigations into the matter had been completed.
“The suspect is in police custody on allegations of receiving a bribe from an election candidate. Investigations have been completed, and he will be produced in court to answer the charges,” Kigozi said.
Police say the suspect faces a bribery charge and is expected to appear before court.
Kigozi also warned Electoral Commission officials against engaging in activities that could compromise the credibility of the election process.
“Election officials must execute their duties with integrity and impartiality. Anyone found manipulating election results or soliciting bribes will face the full force of the law,” he warned.
He said security agencies were closely monitoring the conduct of election officials during the ongoing LC I electoral process.
Police have also appealed to voters to participate peacefully and avoid acts that could disrupt voting.
“We encourage all eligible voters to turn up and vote peacefully. At the same time, anyone intending to cause chaos or interfere with the electoral process should know that the Police are fully prepared to take decisive action,” Kigozi added.
Security agencies say they have increased efforts to prevent bribery, vote manipulation, intimidation and other electoral offences as LC I elections continue.
Authorities say such measures are intended to protect the integrity of the exercise and maintain public confidence in the electoral process.
