Three people, including the driver of a passenger bus, were hospitalised after the vehicle crashed into a bridge in Soroti City shortly after midnight on Sunday.
The Kakise bus, registration number UAS 159P, had been travelling from Soroti to Kampala when it reportedly left the road at Opuyo Trading Centre.
Witnesses said the driver tried to avoid a man who ran across the road while fleeing from a fight.
“We were here at night watching a World Cup football game when we saw a group involved in a fight. As the altercation intensified, one of the boys tried to cross the road, only to collide with the Kakise bus,” eyewitness Isaac Olinga said.
“The accident happened in front of many people here. We may not blame the driver; he was trying to avoid hitting a man who was being chased and attempted to cross the road,” he added.
Driver Alfred Ekongo and two others were rushed to Soroti Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. Police later towed the bus to Soroti Central Police Station while investigations into the incident got underway.
