Three Dead, 19 Injured in Tragic Rukungiri–Ntungamo Road Crash

Three people lost their lives, and 19 others were injured in a road accident involving a bus and a taxi along the Rukungiri–Ntungamo road on Saturday night.

The collision happened around 10:20 pm at Mukabingo village near Mukiragyiro trading center in Buyanja sub-county, Rukungiri district. It involved a Perfect Coach bus (registration UBN 331G) traveling from Kihihi town in Kanungu district toward Kampala and a Toyota Hiace taxi (registration UBA 341G) heading to Rukungiri from Ntungamo.

An eyewitness reported that the bus veered off its lane to avoid a pothole, crashing head-on into the oncoming taxi. Kigezi Region police spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Ronald Akakimpa, 35, the taxi conductor; Liberty Bonance, a 3-year-old Congolese child; and an unidentified female adult.

Maate added that 19 other passengers were injured. Among the wounded are Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) personnel: Captain Bright Musinguzi, Sergeant Edgar Kwesigwa, Corporal Alex Tukwasibwe, and Private Francis Okello.

Other injured individuals include bus conductor Godfrey Tukahirwa, taxi driver Andrew Mwesigwa, Congolese national Pacific Claude, and passengers Blair Abenomugisha, Bernard Nyabanawe (62), Annah Tumwebaze, James Barisimwaki (44), Jackline Amumpire, Florence Kiconco, Oliver Komushana, Oscar Tayebwa, Hassan Kakuru, Frank Baryakira (63), and Johnbosco Atwongirwe.

According to Charles Muzenero, investigations into the cause of the crash are underway. All injured persons were taken to nearby health centers for medical attention.
