Police Block Campaign Event for Kadaga’s Opponent

Police in Mbulamuti Town Council, Kamuli District, halted a rally organized by Ms Noet Nangobi, a contender for the Kamuli Woman MP seat, citing a breach of electoral laws.

Ms Nangobi, who is vying to unseat First Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga, was informed that she must wait for the official campaign period before conducting such activities.

“We are not breaking any laws, but we are ready for the journey ahead. We just ask for peaceful politics,” Ms Nangobi stated shortly before police intervened.

Daniel Kyeyune, the officer in charge, warned against premature campaigning, stating that violators of electoral guidelines would face consequences.

“Don’t cause unnecessary commotion. Once the official campaign period begins, you’ll be free to hold rallies and we’ll ensure your security,” he said.

Before the police stepped in, Ms Nangobi had been addressing her supporters and raised concerns about what she described as selective enforcement of the law. She also called on Ms Kadaga to step down from the Woman MP role, suggesting she is overburdened with national responsibilities.

“We respect Ms Kadaga’s contribution, but she holds too many roles already. Let her focus on her duties in the NRM CEC, the Women’s League, and East African Affairs. It’s time she leads by example when it comes to empowering and mentoring young women,” Ms Nangobi said.

Others in the NRM primary race include Ms Deborah Mwesigwa and Ms Veronica Kagona, while the National Unity Platform’s Ms Proscovia Naikoba Kanakutanda is also eyeing the seat Ms Kadaga has held since 1989.

Kadaga’s long political career has been noted for her work in promoting women’s rights and reproductive health.
