New KCCA ED Buzeki Pledges Strict Measures Against Poor Waste Disposal

The new Executive Director of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Sharifah Buzeki, has pledged iron action against individuals littering and engaging in improper waste disposal in Kampala.

E.D. Buzeki made this declaration during a clean-up drive in Mbuya, Kinawataka, Nakawa Division, where she actively joined local leaders and volunteers in cleaning streets, removing garbage heaps, and unclogging drainage channels.

“Kampala’s sanitation challenges remain significant, with some areas plagued by garbage-related odors and blocked drainage systems,” Buzeki emphasised.

“We will not fold our hands while Kampala suffers. Everyone must play their part in keeping our city clean,” she said while donning a hard hat, reflector jacket, and gloves, a hands-on approach to leadership.

She urged residents to undertake proper waste disposal practices, such as separating biodegradable from non-biodegradable waste.

She also added that garbage trucks would only collect sorted waste, encouraging city dwellers to take responsibility for the cleanliness of the city. “Show love for your city by properly managing waste,” she appealed.

Nakawa Division Mayor Paul Mugambe highlighted the need for designated waste disposal sites, urging KCCA to address the issue urgently.

“A lack of proper dumping sites has caused immense challenges for the people in this area. We request KCCA to take immediate action,” Mugambe said.

Buzeki warned of severe penalties for those caught dumping garbage in streets or drainage systems. “We will not hesitate to take legal action against anyone found polluting the city,” she cautioned.

The clean-up drive is part of KCCA’s broader campaign to improve sanitation across all divisions in Kampala, including Rubaga, Kawempe, and Makindye.
