Churchill James Ssentamu, the son of National Unity Platform (NUP) mobilizer Fred Nyanzi Ssentamu, has firmly stated that he will not apologize for appearing in a photo with President Yoweri Museveni.
The image, which circulated widely on social media, was taken during Makerere University’s Research and Innovation Week, where President Museveni served as the chief guest.

Following the incident, Fred Nyanzi publicly criticized his son and demanded an apology. However, speaking to journalists at the university’s guild offices on Friday, Churchill Ssentamu defended his actions, emphasizing that he was carrying out his official responsibilities as Makerere’s guild president and acting on behalf of the students who elected him. He noted that the photo included several other university leaders.
“As a son, I will not respond to my father’s comments out of respect. That said, I faced a moment of tension between personal values and public duty. My actions were in line with the responsibilities entrusted to me by Makerere University students,” Ssentamu explained.
He further clarified that Makerere, being a public institution, is open to visits from national leaders, including the president, and avoiding such interactions completely is unrealistic, especially in official capacities.
Ssentamu urged the public not to direct their frustration at his family. “Please don’t hold my father accountable for my decisions as guild president. He has his own role within NUP, which doesn’t extend to influencing my leadership at the university,” he said.
He reaffirmed his dedication to serving the student body and the country, emphasizing that criticism would not deter him. He stressed that his focus remains on enhancing student welfare and advancing the university’s interests.
“I accepted this role knowing it comes with challenges. I remain committed to the principles of truth, justice, and servant leadership. My goal is to tirelessly contribute to a better Makerere and a better Uganda,” he concluded.
