The Minister of Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala, has announced that Karuma Bridge will be closed for at least 21 days to complete essential repair works.
The bridge that connects central Uganda to the northern part of the country will be closed to all traffic starting March 10 to March 31, 2025 for the installation of expansion joints.

“This period will also be used to install expansion joints on Ayago Bridge (Karuma-Olwiyo Road) whose expansion joints have been damaged due to fatigue,” Gen. Katumba wrote.

It should be remembered that Karuma Bridge was closed on September 23, 2024, for urgent repairs that cost the government Shs11 billion. It was reopened on December 20, 2024, for only light vehicles to ease travel during the festive season, pending completion repairs.

The repairs will help ensure long-term stability and full traffic restoration, according to the minister.

Alternative routes during this repair period include Kampala-Gulu/West Nile; Via Luwero-Kafu-Masindi-Paraa (Murchison Falls National Park)-Pakwach or Gulu via Olwiyo (and vice versa); and Kampala-Lira; Via Iganga-Nakalama-Tirinyi-Pallisa-Kumi-Soroti-Lira (and vice versa).

Motorists to Lira can also use the Rwenkunye-Apac route via Masindi Port Ferry.
