Karuma and Ayago Bridges Set to Reopen This Monday After Repairs

The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced that both Karuma and Ayago Bridges on the Kampala–Gulu Highway will reopen to all traffic on the morning of Monday, April 14, 2025.

The reopening follows the completion of essential maintenance work that required a temporary closure last month, which had caused concern and travel disruptions across Northern Uganda.

In a statement released on Saturday, April 12, the ministry said the closure allowed for the successful installation and curing of expansion joints—crucial components that enable bridges to adjust to temperature changes and traffic pressure.

The upgrades are aimed at strengthening the structural stability of the bridges and prolonging their service life.

“We extend our gratitude to all road users and stakeholders for their patience and understanding during this critical maintenance period,” the ministry said.

The mid-March closure had sparked concern among travelers and traders who depend on the Kampala–Gulu corridor, especially during the busy Easter period. It resulted in longer detours, increased fuel expenses, and delays in the transport of goods to and from northern Uganda.

While traffic will resume on April 14, the ministry noted that minor works such as the installation of guardrails, streetlights, river protection measures, cat’s eyes, and painting of steel plate girders will continue. However, these ongoing activities are not expected to disrupt the flow of traffic.
