The Kigezi region is fast becoming the land of the strange. Police in Kabale District are investigating circumstances under which a 23-year-old man suspected of theft drowned after he allegedly fell into a ditch filled with water.
A resident of Kabura Village, Kyanamira Sub County in Kabale District in Western Uganda, allegedly drowned on Sunday as he attempted to flee from a group of angry locals who reportedly wanted to lynch him on allegations of stealing a pig.

Kasirikare was reportedly accused, alongside one Seguya, of stealing the swine valued at Shs250,000, belonging to one of the residents.
“Yesterday (Sunday) at around 1400hrs, at Kabura village, the deceased together with his colleague, one identified as Seguya, went and stole a pig from one of the residents yet to be identified within Kyanamira.”
“While he was being chased by residents, he fell into a ditch that had water, thereby drowning. The police are on ground to establish the facts of the matter,” Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, Mr. Elly Maate, said.
Mr. Maate added that Kasirikare’s death was reported to police by relatives.
The police publicist added that “a case file of drowning was opened to investigate the alleged matter to establish the truth because the scene of the crime was visited, examined, and documented by the Kabale homicide team led by D/SP Mukama Hakim and team. Relevant statements were recorded from witnesses.”
Kasirikare’s body was retrieved from the ditch and taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem as investigations into his death continue.
