Police in Kakumiro District have dispersed a group of demonstrators calling for the release of Onesimus Twinamasiko, the ruling party’s parliamentary flagbearer for Bugangaizi East.
Twinamasiko was arrested earlier this week and charged with assaulting Prime Minister Robinnah Nabbanja during the announcement of National Resistance Movement (NRM) primary results at the party’s district offices on 17 July.

On Wednesday, he appeared before the Kibaale Chief Magistrate’s Court, where he denied the charges. His request for bail was rejected, and he was remanded in custody until 10 September.
The decision sparked protests on Thursday, as hundreds of his supporters—among them youth, women and elderly residents from Kisiita town council and nearby areas—took to the streets demanding his release. They accused authorities of using the case to block his nomination for Parliament and urged President Yoweri Museveni to intervene in what they described as internal wrangles within the NRM’s district leadership.
Police moved in to disperse the protesters, leading to running battles after officers blocked the procession.
Kisiita police station chief Peter Muyemba said the demonstration was unlawful, explaining that organisers had not sought clearance as required by law. He added that the matter was before court and would not be resolved through street protests.
