EC Denies Reports MPs Akena and Amongi Missing From Voters Register

Uganda’s Electoral Commission (EC) has rejected claims circulating on social media that two sitting Members of Parliament are not listed on the national voters register.

The reports alleged that Lira City East MP Jimmy Akena and Oyam South MP Betty Amongi had been omitted from the roll, sparking speculation ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Speaking on Wednesday, EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi confirmed both legislators are properly registered and eligible to vote in their chosen polling areas.

“The Commission has seen and heard social media reports alleging that Jimmy Akena and Betty Amongi are missing from the national voters register. To the contrary, both are registered in the places they selected,” he said.

Mucunguzi added that the Commission had verified their records and shared the evidence with the concerned parties, urging the public to disregard the misinformation.

He stressed: “The public should note that both Jimmy Akena and Betty Amongi are indeed on the national voters register. Therefore, social media reports claiming otherwise are incorrect.”

The clarification comes as political mobilisation intensifies across the country in the run-up to the 2026 polls.
