According to local residents, the deceased, identified as Silvester Byaruhanga, a mechanic at Ramathdan’s garage in Kabale town, is believed to have tried to cut a live wire that had fallen from a three-phase power line, intending to sell it as scrap.
Samuel Phaitom, who was out jogging, said he had earlier seen the wire on the ground and was later informed that Byaruhanga had been fatally electrocuted after tampering with it. Another resident, Maureen Atuheire, criticised the act, saying the victim should not have interfered with a live electrical line.
Kigezi regional police spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed the incident, noting that Byaruhanga’s body was taken to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for a post-mortem. He added that investigations are ongoing.
