Gunfire and tear gas filled the streets of Buwenge Town in Jinja District after security forces shot and killed a man accused of mobilising violence during Thursday’s ruling party primaries.
The suspect, identified as Tibenkana, was killed on Friday morning while allegedly trying to flee from custody at Buwenge Police Station. Authorities said he had been linked to a group of youths accused of intimidating and assaulting voters during the National Resistance Movement (NRM) local council flag bearer elections.

Jinja Assistant Resident District Commissioner, Samuel Kawuta, confirmed the death. He told reporters that the suspect was part of a gang armed with machetes and spiked sticks, targeting supporters of incumbent Buwenge Town Council LC3 chairperson, Hassan Kinusa, who later secured victory over rival candidate Isamail Ozanya.
“The deceased was taken from his cell to clean the station compound. He attempted to escape, ignored warning shots, and was eventually shot in the chest,” Mr Kawuta said.
The killing sparked chaos as supporters of Mr Ozanya stormed the police station, seized the body, and paraded it through the town towards Mr Kinusa’s residence. Protesters hurled stones at police and blocked roads, prompting security forces to fire tear gas and call in military reinforcements to restore order.
Despite the unrest, election officials confirmed Mr Kinusa as the winner.
Kagoma County MP Alex Kintu Brandon condemned the shooting, describing it as “unprofessional.” He urged police authorities to hold the officer involved accountable.
“The officer who fired the shot must face the Police Professional Standards Unit. He should have acted more professionally instead of resorting to lethal force,” Mr Kintu said, adding that he was engaging with senior police officials to ensure the matter is investigated.
