Police Retrieve CCTV in Seeta High Drowning Investigation

Police in Mukono District have obtained CCTV footage from Seeta High School as part of an ongoing investigation into the drowning of a Senior Six student last week.

Speaking to journalists on Monday, Mukono Police spokesperson, Mr Rusoke Kituuma, said detectives are reviewing the footage for clues. Several school administrators have already recorded statements, and some arrests have been made.

Among those detained is the school’s swimming pool attendant, who police say was responsible for overseeing activities at the pool. “Detectives believe he has questions to answer about how the student ended up in the water,” Mr Rusoke said.

The case file has been prepared and is awaiting guidance from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The victim, identified as 21-year-old Kevin Nsamba, was a boarding student. According to police, the incident happened on Sunday, 3 August, at around 5:30pm, shortly after a football match. Nsamba reportedly ran to the pool with other students and jumped into the deep end while trainees were in the water under a lifeguard’s supervision.

When Nsamba failed to attend a scheduled movie session later that evening, students alerted staff. Despite a search, he was not found, and his absence was formally reported to police the next day.

The tragedy follows a series of unsettling incidents at Seeta High School, including the unresolved death of 16-year-old Elishama Ssesaazi earlier this year, and has sparked renewed concerns about student safety.

Authorities note that drowning remains one of Uganda’s leading causes of accidental death. Police statistics show 119 drowning cases recorded in 2024—down from 138 the previous year but still making up 62% of all maritime-related incidents.

Parents and community members in Mukono say the recent deaths have left them deeply concerned about safety measures in schools.
