The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) has urged Ugandans to stay alert and avoid falling victim to corruption during the ongoing mass renewal of national identity cards.
Addressing journalists, NIRA Registrar Ollama Claire reiterated that key services—such as updating residency information and clarifying personal details—are provided free of charge.

“We want to make it clear that updating details like your place of residence should not cost anything,” she said, warning the public against making any payments for services that are officially free.
Ms. Ollama also emphasized that NIRA does not offer any form of express processing, noting that all applicants will be served in the order they arrive.
“There are no express lanes or special arrangements. Services are provided strictly on a first-come, first-served basis. Any offer of quicker service for a fee is illegal,” she warned.
The agency has encouraged citizens to report any suspicious behaviour or attempts by individuals to exploit the process for personal profit.
The national ID renewal campaign is part of a broader government initiative to ensure that all eligible Ugandans hold valid identification ahead of upcoming national programmes and elections.
