Ronen Bar, the director of Israel’s domestic intelligence agency, Shin Bet, has announced his resignation, effective June 15, 2025. His decision comes in response to the agency’s failure to prevent the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack, which killed more than 1,100 people in Israel.

Bar, who has headed the Shin Bet since 2021, cited “personal and professional responsibility” for the security lapse in his resignation letter. He said his exit was intended to allow for a smooth leadership transition and underscore the importance of accountability.
His resignation follows months of political tension and legal battles with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who earlier tried to remove him from office. That attempt was blocked by Israel’s Supreme Court, which ruled that firing Bar during an ongoing war was legally unjustified.
Bar had already publicly expressed remorse for the intelligence failure during a memorial for the victims. Analysts view his resignation as both a sign of leadership accountability and a move to protect the agency’s independence amid rising political pressure.
Tensions between Bar and Netanyahu reportedly worsened after Bar resisted requests to use Shin Bet to monitor anti-government demonstrators and allegedly interfere with Netanyahu’s corruption trial. Bar refused, warning that such actions would compromise the agency’s neutrality and democratic values. Netanyahu has denied these claims but accused Bar of losing his confidence.
Public backlash against Bar’s attempted dismissal in March led to rare judicial intervention. The Supreme Court temporarily blocked the move, highlighting growing concern over political influence on Israel’s security institutions.
In his farewell message to Shin Bet staff, Bar emphasized the importance of maintaining the agency’s professionalism and impartiality. “Shin Bet’s credibility must remain intact—not only with the government but also with the public—for the sake of our democracy and national security,” he wrote.
No successor has been announced yet. Bar’s departure adds to the growing leadership uncertainty within Israel’s security apparatus during an ongoing war and heightened regional tensions.
