Norbert Mao has been re-elected as president of the Democratic Party for a fourth consecutive term, garnering 969 votes in a closely fought internal race.

His main rival, Dr. Lulume Bayigga, secured 339 votes, while Elia Alitia came in third with 52 votes.
Originally slated for Saturday, the election was postponed and held under tight security. The vote tallying was later relocated from the delegates’ conference venue to a Kampala hotel following heightened tensions and protests from some party members.
Mao, who has been at the party’s helm since 2010, continues to lead amid ongoing internal rifts and uncertainty over the party’s future direction.
