Police in Bukedea District, Eastern Uganda, are investigating the fatal shooting of a 28-year-old motorcyclist by unidentified assailants who fled with his motorcycle.

The victim, Bashir Emaat, a boda boda rider and resident of Amusek Village in Akwarikawar Sub-county, was reportedly lured from his stage by individuals posing as customers before being killed at his home.

According to Mr. Hasuman Omonuk, the LCI chairperson of Amusek, Emaat’s body was found on the morning of June 2.
“It’s a heartbreaking loss for the community. He was taken from his boda boda stage and later found dead at his residence,” Mr. Omonuk said.

Police recovered a spent cartridge near the body, indicating that the assailants used a pistol, which has left the community in shock. The body was taken to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination.

“We have visited the scene but are still awaiting a formal report. The recovered cartridge will be sent for ballistic analysis,” said Bukedea District Police Commander Emmy Lorika.

The incident occurred just two days after another boda boda rider, Ben Ocom from Adidinga Village in Kocheka Sub-county, was attacked in Bukedea Town and his motorcycle (Reg. No. UFV 168/H) was stolen.

Mr. William Opio, chairperson of the Bukedea Boda Boda Association, expressed concern over the rising cases of motorcycle thefts involving armed assailants, saying the trend has instilled fear among riders in the district.
