According to Bukedi North Regional Police spokesperson Wilfred Kyempasa, Yakobo was struck by a sudden powerful gust of wind—referred to locally as a cyclone—which caused him to lose control of his motorcycle and crash into an oncoming Toyota Hiace taxi. He died instantly at the scene.
Yakobo had been riding a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle with registration UEA 645E, while the taxi, a Toyota Hiace with number plate UAJ 766N, was being driven by 27-year-old Ayub Waiswa from Namatala Ward in Mbale City.
Waiswa reported the incident to police and is cooperating with the investigation. Both vehicles involved have been impounded at Pallisa Police Station for inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles.
The body of the deceased was transported to Pallisa Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem.
This incident adds to the increasing number of road traffic fatalities in Uganda. The 2024 Annual Police Crime Report highlights a 6.4% rise in total crashes, reaching 25,107 incidents in 2024 compared to 23,608 in 2023. Fatal accidents rose by 6.1%, totaling 4,434.
Mr. Kyempasa emphasized the dangers of unpredictable weather and urged road users to remain vigilant under such conditions.
Eyewitnesses at Kamuge Cattle Market, near the crash site, described the windstorm as unusually intense.
“One moment it was calm, and then the wind swept through like a storm—people had to hold onto poles,” said Musa Okello, a market vendor. “The teacher just had terrible luck.”
Police noted that although weather-related accidents are less common, they tend to be more deadly due to the abrupt loss of vehicle control.
Investigations into the crash are ongoing.
