Mother Arrested in Bushenyi Over Murder of her Two-Year-Old Son

Police in Greater Bushenyi have launched an investigation into the suspected murder of a two-year-old boy by his 28-year-old mother in Kazirwa Village, Muziguru Parish, Bitsya Sub-county.

According to Greater Bushenyi Regional Police Spokesperson Mr. Apollo Tayebwa, the suspect has been identified as Immaculate Kwetegyeka and the deceased child as Kellian Akandwanaho. Tayebwa stated that local residents allege Kwetegyeka has a history of mental illness.

“Immaculate Kwetegyeka was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly kicking and trampling her son to death. The community reports she has exhibited signs of mental instability. We have initiated an investigation and will conduct a medical assessment to determine her mental state,” Tayebwa said on Thursday.

He urged the public to be proactive in reporting individuals who may be mentally distressed or potentially dangerous.

“We encourage citizens to report individuals displaying signs of mental health issues, depression, or erratic behavior. Such cases could pose serious risks to both the individual and those around them,” he added.

The child’s body was taken to Nsiika Health Centre IV for a postmortem as police continue their inquiries.

This case follows a recent incident in Buhweju District where, on April 13, 2025, Shallon Nshemererwe allegedly murdered her husband, Patrick Bainomugisha, and buried his body in their home after a domestic dispute.

The 2024 Annual Police Crime Report noted 4,329 homicide cases, up by 1.9% from 4,248 in 2023. Of these, 1,274 were taken to court, 333 were dropped, and 2,722 remained under investigation. A total of 4,411 people were reported killed, including 3,494 adult males, 594 adult females, 209 male children, and 114 female children.
