Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among has officially declared her intention to contest for the position of Second Vice Chairperson (Female) on the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party.
Her decision sets the stage for a high-profile political showdown with her predecessor, Rebecca Kadaga, who currently holds the position and has expressed interest in maintaining her seat.

While speaking at a political event in Pallisa District over the weekend, Ms Among revealed that she had received repeated appeals from her supporters to enter the race, prompting her to finally make a formal announcement.
“The endorsement I’ve received means a great deal to me. Until now, I hadn’t made an official declaration. People have continuously urged me to contest, and I’ve chosen to respond to their call. Today, I officially declare that I will be standing for the position,” she told journalists during the event.
Ms Among also expressed confidence in her qualifications, pointing to her leadership experience and political influence. “Do you doubt my capabilities? I’ve been tried and tested. I’ve led Parliament for five years without any instability. When it comes to mobilization, I’m the best at it,” she asserted.
Attempts to reach Ms Kadaga for comment were unsuccessful. However, in a prior interview with New Vision, the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for East African Community Affairs confirmed she intends to retain the post. She highlighted her long-standing service in the role since the party’s founding and expressed confidence that she remains the right person for the job.
Commenting on the matter, NRM Electoral Commission Chairperson Tanga Odoi said, “Among has every right, as a Ugandan citizen, to contest for any position she desires. No one can prevent her from doing so.”
The contest is expected to be closely watched, given the prominence of both women within the ruling party and their influential roles in Uganda’s political landscape.
