Bobi Wine’s Civilian Bodyguards Comitted to High Court Over Robbery Charges

Three civilian bodyguards of opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, have been formally committed to the High Court to face charges including robbery, assault, and malicious damage to property.

On Wednesday, Masaka Chief Magistrate Abudallah Kayiza read out the charges against Achileo Kivumbi, Gaddafi Mugumya, and Grace Wakabi Smart before referring the case to the High Court.

“You are now committed to the High Court for trial at its next convenient session,” the magistrate announced.

The suspects face six counts, among them aggravated and simple robbery, as well as assault. Prosecutor Michael Wakosese informed the court that investigations were complete and the Director of Public Prosecutions had assembled enough evidence to proceed with trial.

The charges relate to events of May 18, 2024, in Manja Village, Kisekka Sub-county in Lwengo District, during the funeral of UK-based businessman Pascal Ssekasamba, which attracted media attention.

Prosecution alleges that the trio attacked journalist Margret Kayondo of Radio Simba, robbing her of a green sweater and a Camon12 phone worth Shs730,000, using sharp weapons and sticks.

They are also accused of assaulting Zainab Namusaazi, a journalist with Next Media Group, and damaging her camera valued at Shs1.5 million. The altercation reportedly began after attempts to block media coverage at the event.

Further charges include the alleged theft of Shs200,000 from Rodgers Mulungi and John Mukalaazi, and the assault and phone theft involving Drake Lubega and Haruna Ssekitto.

Defense attorney George Musisi said bail had been sought and the legal team was ready to defend their clients.

“We’re glad the case has reached the High Court. We’re confident our clients will get justice,” Musisi said, stressing that the charges appeared politically driven. “It’s ridiculous to claim someone committed robbery over a sweater and a phone.”

Fellow lawyer Erias Nalukoola stated they are awaiting a plea date and will demand full disclosure of prosecution evidence.

Meanwhile, a heavy security presence was deployed at the courthouse, where a handful of NUP supporters had gathered. They were later dispersed with tear gas.

Defense lawyer Sam Muyizzi criticized the security deployment, saying it disrupted the public’s access to court.

The accused were among those arrested during a security raid on NUP offices in Makerere-Kavule in February. They were held incommunicado until appearing in court on March 26.
