What began as a night of jubilation ended in tragedy on Tuesday when an Arsenal supporter lost his life in a deadly crash following the team’s dominant 3-0 win over Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals.
The resounding victory over the 15-time champions sent Arsenal fans across Uganda, especially in Jinja City, into frenzied celebrations. However, the excitement took a dark turn at Mafubira Trading Centre along the Jinja-Kamuli Highway.

Eyewitnesses reported that the unidentified fan, overcome with joy, mounted a motorcycle moments after the match and began performing risky stunts on the road. The reckless ride ended when he slammed into a stationary truck parked along the roadside.
He suffered critical injuries and was rushed to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. According to Kiira Region Police spokesperson James Mubi, the victim’s identity has not yet been made public as investigations are ongoing.
Arsenal’s commanding win places them in a strong position to eliminate the reigning champions and reach the semi-finals—a feat the North London club has not achieved since their 2006 loss to Barcelona in the final.
The lack of Champions League silverware has made even milestone victories highly emotional for Arsenal fans, sometimes leading to excessive celebrations in Uganda. This latest fatality is part of a troubling trend.
In 2023, several Arsenal fans in Jinja were arrested for staging an unauthorized street procession after a win against Manchester United. Other celebratory incidents that year turned deadly, including a fatal motorcycle crash in Arua and a stabbing linked to a football rivalry. One of the most tragic cases occurred in Masaka District, where 26-year-old John Ssenyonga was shot dead by a security guard following unrest during late-night fan celebrations.
Authorities have consistently urged the public to celebrate responsibly, warning against reckless behavior and unauthorized gatherings. SP Mubi reiterated the importance of maintaining safety during moments of joy.
“Football brings people together, but it shouldn’t come at the cost of life or public safety,” Mubi said in a prior statement.
As the investigation into Tuesday’s incident continues, law enforcement is expected to tighten measures around major football events to curb further tragedies.
