A section of Jozan Nursery and Primary School in Soroti City, eastern Uganda, was set on fire by enraged residents protesting the delayed trial of suspects linked to the murder of six-year-old pupil Joan Faith Apio.
Apio’s body was discovered in the school latrine last month with a deep cut on her neck, just three days after she had been enrolled in the boarding section.

The suspects, including the school’s directors, a police officer, and staff members, were expected to appear in court in person but instead attended via Zoom. Those charged in connection to Apio’s murder include:
- Suzan Vivian Ariokot Okedi (38) & Joseph Okedi – School directors
- James Edoket – Headteacher
- John Bosco Obotol (34) – Police officer attached to Madera Police Station
- Osula Adong – School matron
- Valentine Opio – School cook
- Two juveniles (identities withheld)
On Thursday, Grade One Magistrate Kibirige Apollo Kasujja adjourned the case to March 20, 2025, citing the “sensitivity of the case” as the reason for not producing the suspects in court.
This decision outraged the packed courtroom, where many had gathered seeking justice for Apio. Security had already been tightened around the courthouse, and activists advocating for Apio’s family had set up a live video stream to broadcast the proceedings.
Following the adjournment, furious residents took to the streets, with some storming Jozan Nursery and Primary School, setting fire to key facilities, including the headteacher’s office, school canteen, storage rooms, and dormitories.
Apio’s mother, Angel Eveline Akol, expressed her frustration, insisting that the suspects should be physically presented in court. Meanwhile, the fire brigade was deployed to control the flames, while anti-riot police used tear gas and live bullets to disperse the rioters.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any arrests were made in connection to the unrest. As the March 20 court date nears, public attention on the case continues to intensify.
