Nigerian Muslims Arrested for Eating in Public During Ramadan

Islamic authorities in Kano, a northern Nigerian state, have arrested several Muslims for publicly eating and drinking, as well as vendors selling food, at the start of Ramadan—a period when Muslims are required to fast from dawn to dusk.

Deputy Commander of the Hisbah (Islamic police), Mujahid Aminudeen, told the BBC that 20 individuals were arrested for not fasting and five others for selling food. He emphasized that the enforcement operations would continue throughout the holy month, which began on Saturday.

“We do not concern ourselves with non-Muslims,” Aminudeen clarified, adding that any display of “disrespect” toward Ramadan would not be tolerated.

“It is disheartening to see adult Muslims eating and drinking in public during this sacred month. We will not condone such actions, which is why we carried out the arrests,” he stated.

All 25 individuals were charged in a Sharia court and will face appropriate penalties. Aminudeen also revealed that authorities often receive tip-offs from concerned citizens when people are seen eating in public, prompting swift action.

In addition to enforcing fasting rules, Hisbah officers arrested individuals for “inappropriate haircuts,” wearing shorts above the knee, and tricycle drivers for mixing male and female passengers.

Unlike last year, when arrested individuals were released after pledging to observe the fast, those detained this year will have to face court proceedings.

Sharia law was introduced alongside Nigeria’s secular legal system over two decades ago in 12 northern states with predominantly Muslim populations. It does not apply to Christian minorities residing in these states.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, holds deep significance for Muslims, as it marks the revelation of the Quran’s first verses to Prophet Muhammad. Fasting during daylight hours is one of Islam’s Five Pillars, guiding Muslim life.

This year, Ramadan is expected to last 29 or 30 days, concluding on Sunday, March 30.
