The Ministry of Internal Affairs has announced another one-year extension for the mass renewal of national identification cards, postponing the deadline once again. This decision aims to provide more time for integrating enhanced security features and addressing emerging challenges.
Initially planned for June to September 2024, the renewal exercise was later pushed to October 2025. Now, the government has confirmed that expired National IDs will remain valid for an additional year, giving citizens more time to renew.

State Minister for Internal Affairs, General David Muhoozi, assured the public that preparations for the renewal process are ongoing. “We have secured the necessary equipment, and staff training is in progress,” he stated. The Minister also highlighted ongoing efforts to upgrade the National Security Information System (NSIS) to improve ID security features ahead of the enrolment exercise.
During a parliamentary session, MPs expressed concerns over the slow pace of the renewal process and the continued use of physical IDs. Rukiga County MP Roland Bish Ndyomugyenyi advocated for a fully digital ID renewal system, citing potential efficiencies. Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa raised issues about the financial strain on taxpayers funding such programs.
In response, Minister Muhoozi confirmed that digital IDs are in development, aiming to ease the financial burden on citizens and address the problem of expired IDs. He assured that efforts are underway to streamline the renewal process.
The extension provides citizens with more time to renew their IDs as the government works to digitize the system and strengthen security measures for future national IDs.
