Kibuku Storm Displaces Over 100 Families

A trial of devastation has been left in Kibuku district, Eastern region, after it was hit with heavy rains and winds, leaving over 100 families homeless.

Mr. Langa Moses described the damage, saying, “The storm unroofed houses and destroyed several acres of crops. We lost household properties worth millions and currently have no shelter for the entire family. The rains lasted two hours but caused severe havoc in the area. Heavy trees and electric poles were uprooted, leaving the area in total darkness.”

The hardest hit areas are the parishes of Nakitende, Kagumu, Nakoma, and Nankokoli, and many families are seeking shelter in schools.

Mr. Titus Nyiro from a different parish is quoted, “I have never seen anything like this before; the wind was so strong that it lifted the roof off our house. Everything we had is gone; we’re now left with nothing, and we don’t know where to go or what to do next.”

Kibuuku district, located in Bukedi subregion, Eastern Uganda, was curved out of Pallisa district in 2010. After years of extensive tree cutting for firewood and charcoal, the low-lying flat terrain has been left vulnerable to weather extremes and soil erosion.

Hunger looms, “The heavy rains characterised by gusty winds swept off rooftops of several houses and flattened acres of crops,” Naulele Njiri, the Kagumu Subcounty head, wailed to reporters.

This comes after landslides buried scores and left more homeless in the Elgon Mountain ranges.
Uganda is currently facing weather extremes.
