India’s population appears to overtake China’s already, analysts estimate

India may have already surpassed China as the world’s most populous nation, according to estimates by the World Population Review, an independent census and demographics organization.

The South Asian country had a population of 1.417 billion as of end 2022. That’s a little over 5 million more than the 1.412 billion reported by China Tuesday, when authorities announced the country’s first population decline since the 1960s.

Moreover, China’s population, down by 850,000 in 2022 from a year earlier, is projected to continue shrinking. India, on the other hand, where half of the population is now under 30, will experience population growth until at least 2050.

The UN estimates that more than half of the global population increase projected between 2022 and 2050 will be concentrated in just eight countries: the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Tanzania.
